2008 - 2012

For the Draw This Again Contest I chose to redraw a work of my character Ysa I drew back in 2008.

Ysa is my oldest character and even tough she developed a lot since the very fist time I drew her in 1999, I eventually found a 'style' for her that I thought was suitable. After all, when we create a character and a story the character will have certain characteristics and must have a certain consistency in its look.

Ysa developed into the style you see in the 2008 picture. I drew her very often and she always looked like this with her large Tenchi Muyo inspired eyes and the sign on her forehead I removed later because it didn't have a function anymore. It became quite boring to draw her since all that changed about her were her costumes.

My boyfriend eventually asked: 'why does Ysa always look like that? Why not try and draw her differently, for instance like a real human being?'
Even tough I was bored with Ysa's design I found this very hard to do, for the simple reason that I just like the manga style. But still, some change was needed. So I started experimenting a little. It resulted in... not so very much but hey, it was a start

Up to date I still have no intention to abandon the manga style completely but I did start to like different styles as well. So therefore I chose to redraw this work and give Ysa a more realistic feel but still doing the cell-shade thing that I just love to do. All other improvement will probably come later when I get bored with this style of work.
